“BEN BİLİRİM” ADLI YARIŞMA PROGRAMININ SÖZ VARLIĞI ÜZERİNDEKİ ETKİSİNİN İNCELENMESİ

Özet

The development of vocabulary begins at an early age and is influenced by various factors such as family environment, peer interaction, reading habits, and media exposure. Among the most widespread mass communication tools, television holds a significant role in this process. While television can serve as an educational tool when used appropriately, low-quality and poorly constructed programs may negatively impact language development. In this context, television quiz shows play an important role in promoting effective language use and enriching vocabulary. Programs based on general knowledge, word games, and linguistic challenges help viewers reinforce their semantic knowledge, learn new words, and enhance their vocabulary through curiosity-driven engagement. Although these programs are designed for entertainment, attention to the quality of questions and the language used by hosts and participants is essential. This study examines the impact of the television quiz show Ben Bilirim on Turkish vocabulary. The research aims to identify the vocabulary components presented in the program and analyze them within a linguistic and cultural framework. The content of the show was categorized into themes such as semantics, general knowledge, idioms, proverbs, metaphors, expressions, education, abbreviations, synonyms, grammar, correct spelling, slang, punctuation, tongue twisters, proper names, anecdotes, and literary references. The data were obtained from ten consecutive episodes of the fifth season, broadcast between June 17 and June 28, 2024, out of a total of 226 episodes. The episodes were transcribed and analyzed using document analysis. The findings reveal that several recurring vocabulary categories support Turkish language education. The show, hosted by Alper Ateş, was found to have a positive impact on the enrichment of Turkish vocabulary. The study highlights the importance of mass media in fostering linguistic awareness and enhancing language richness. It is suggested that television programs should not only be seen as entertainment tools but also be considered as means for public education and cultural awareness, and approached with appropriate seriousness.
